Matt Deutsch Named 2010 Hawkeye Chapter Safety Professional of the Year

The recipient of the 2010 Hawkeye Chapter Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) Award is Matt Deutsch, Vice President of Compliance for Hydro-Klean, Inc., in Des Moines. During the past year, Matt has facilitated (HAZWOPER) training for 121 members of Iowa's Household Hazardous Waste - Regional Collection Centers, presented at the Iowa HAZMAT Symposium, and laid the ground work for a Local Chapter of the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals.

He has championed continuing education, shown both through his EHS team, who all have achieved professional certifications, and his own efforts this year when he attained the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation. This made Matt one of five professionals in the state who hold both the CSP and the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) designations. All of this was accomplished while serving as the Vice President of Compliance for Hydro-Klean, which, due to his efforts and leadership, was able to reduce one facility’s Recordable Incident Rate by 40% in 2009 while another facility had a zero injury year. Last year, Matt helped to organize the successful Hawkeye Chapter PDC. Matt was presented with the Chapter SPY Award by Hawkeye Chapter President Dave Hraha during the Hawkeye Chapter Professional Development Conference on May 6th, 2010.

Now in the position of Senior Engineer, he assists EMC policyholders around the country with workplace safety, with a focus in the areas of workers’ compensation and fleet safety.
